Where to Store a Luggage in Amsterdam? - Amsterdam Hangout (2024)

Always when I travel I have a big suitcase with me. It’s quite annoying to drag this big luggage all the time, especially on rainy and cold days… Visiting new places is both fun and valuable but there are things that can definitely make the quality of your trip worse and one of them is the luggage that needs to be carried with you all day long. Thank God, for a few years there are these little companies that store your luggage.

You can leave your luggage in a hotel. There are some lockers available at the airport and Amsterdam Central Station. There’s also a new, innovative, yet safe solution: LuggageHero. Prices start at 1 euro per hour. There are around 40 locations in Amsterdam.

In this article, I will explain to you everything about storing your luggage in Amsterdam, how much it costs and where you can find the closest location. I will also answer the most frequently asked questions.

Where to Store Your Luggage in Amsterdam?

So, you find yourself in Amsterdam. You’d like to take a quick walk around Vondelpark, start a shopping spree in one of the malls or relax in one of the lovely cafes or restaurants (by the way, check out some cool spots to have an inexpensive meal) but all the time you’re looking at your bags. Exploring the city is not an option for you today even if you have a few hours to spare. Usually, you have the following options on where to leave your baggage:

  • Lockers at the Schiphol Airport – there is a convenient luggage storage facility with lockers in various sizes. Lockers are located on the lower level between the major arrival halls.
  • Amsterdam Central Station lockers – they are located in the east wing of the station, in a special room. It’s quite expensive though (as well as lockers at Schiphol).
  • Lockers available in the city – they are usually pricey and have size limits.

To be honest, to me, a better option is to store luggage at storage right next to my current location and enjoy what Amsterdam has to offer carelessly. Like, see the best museums in the city or something like that. What would you say if someone just stores your luggage safely for a few hours? Does it sound interesting? Hell yeah! There are many options when it comes to luggage storage in Amsterdam, but by far my favorite is LuggageHero!

What Is LuggageHero?

LuggageHero is an international network of short-term luggage storage options. Sites are located in places like cafes, shops, hotels etc. The main idea behind launching the project was to make you unattached to your baggage in the safest possible way while travelling. The network now operates in major European countries, as well as North America. You will find LuggageHero lockers in New York, London, Paris, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and many other cities. And there are hundreds of new locations on their ways to be opened in upcoming months. LuggageHero is now the no. 1 luggage storage option in over 35 countries and it’s expanding all the time.

Here are some numbers to show you how serious the business is:

  • In January 2020 LuggageHero counted 1,950,000 hours of storage (in total).
  • There have been 231,000 unique registered users so far.
  • Travelers have given more than 44,600 reviews.

A Little Bit of History…

The company was set up in 2016 in Copenhagen. The founded, Jannik Lawaetz was sick of dragging around his luggage every time he had been traveling. This is why he invented a unique concept of safe luggage storage. It was supposed to be easy, cheap and reliable. He started cooperating with Kristian Loekkegaard. After a year, they opened first lockers in London and New York and in 2019, they already had over 35 locations.

What Is LuggageHero Service?

LuggageHero is a perfect solution for those who want to spend time exploring a new city instead of watching their luggage all the time. After all, traveling is all about gaining new experiences, adventures and getting to know new people. Carrying bags is not included! With LuggageHero you can leave your luggage in one of the safe locations and pay only for the exact time you’re using the locker. Whenever you have a long layover, late check-in of a few hours between check-out and your flight, LuggageHero is there for you.

How Does 24 Hour Luggage Storage Work? Is It Expensive?

I must say, I didn’t expect LuggageHero to be so quick and easy. The whole process literally takes minutes. In order to leave your bags in a safe site just follow the steps below:

  1. Open Luggage Hero in your smartphone or laptop. You don’t need to download anything. You just book the service via the LuggageHero website.
  2. Find the nearest available location to store your belongings. Use the map provided in the system. You can choose lockers in the neighborhood (‘My location’ function) or just search for a particular address.
  3. Book the location you want to use. You will get directions by email and / or SMS. The same directions you’ll see on your booking page.
  4. Turn on the timer once you arrive in the shop for insurance. Check yourself in. Use the link provided when booking.
  5. Attach security seal (seals are provided in the shop) through the zippers of your bag. You need to take a picture of the seal attached to your bag. This is kind of a receipt. Your bag is now considered delivered.
  6. Time to start the storage timer. No worries if you don’t have an Internet connection on your phone. Most sites have free WiFi. If you accidentally started the storage timer too soon, it’s okay. You can just stop it – all you need to do is stop the timer and cancel your mistaken check-in. Don’t forget to inform LuggageHero about the mistake. Send an email or use the chat.
  7. Stop the timer when you pick up your belongings so that the payment can proceed.

So, it is really a snap – you just go to the reservation platform, look for a handy storage site on a map provided by Luggage Hero and book your locker. Easy, isn’t it? A cool thing is that you don’t have to download anything. In order to store your luggage, you just go to the website.

Luggage storage sites are always located inside an existing business and all of them are vetted by LuggageHero’s local employee. Usually, sites are inside retail outlets, cafes, and hotels. They are regularly checked to maintain the highest quality. The company makes sure to store your bags away from any public access. The luggage must always be secured with a security seal.

How to Pay For LuggageHero

Unlike other services, at LuggageHero you pay by the hour which I find extremely convenient. The whole process is fast and low-cost. Everything is paid online. You just submit your credit card information while booking a site. This way you don’t have to worry about the currency. All major credit cards are accepted. It’s impossible to use cash while paying for the service. No fees are charged until you drop off the luggage. You are charged by the hour. There is also a daily maximum set. You can leave your baggage in the storage for many days if you want to. A cool thing is that you only pay if you show up. You pay for the service when you drop off your baggage no sooner. I think it’s a very fair option. If you fail to shop up for your booking, no amount is charged at all. No no-show fees.

Are There Any Size Limitations?

Actually, no. You can store almost any kind of baggage. There are a few locations that are rather small but most of them can easily store massive bags. They can even store your bike if needed. It’s all about checking luggage capacity before booking the site. If you want to store a bike or something bigger, you need to find a site with a capacity of 10 or more.

Where to Store Luggage in Amsterdam Airport? Is there Any Luggage Storage at Amsterdam Central Station?

There are many network local shops located around the airport. Same with Amsterdam Central Station. Luggage storage is now easier than ever. Currently, there are over 40 LuggageHero locations in Amsterdam. The most popular sites in Amsterdam are located next to:

  • De Wallen,
  • Dam,
  • Anne Frank House,
  • Van Gogh Museum,
  • Nieuwmarkt Metro Station,
  • Centraal Station,
  • Rijksmuseum.

Click here to see the full map. Most of Amsterdam’s addresses are shops and cafes.

How Much Does the Service Cost?

As mentioned above, while booking with LuggageHero, you don’t have to pay for the entire day. You pay for the exact time you use the site. No need to pay for hours not spent. For each hour you are usually charged 1 euro. There is also a one-time handling fee of 2 euros. However, the maximum charge for 1 entire day is 8 euro and it already includes the handling fee. The price is listed on each shop profile (it included insurance). No surprises and disappointments.

Is LuggageHero Safe?

For me, at first, leaving my belongings with a total stranger (even in a relatively safe place as a shop or a café is) felt a bit weird. However, LuggageHero has developed some strict procedures to make sure all luggage stored with them is perfectly safe. Each site is regularly checked (there is a manual certification process), all bags are sealed and on top of that, each luggage has insurance of up to 2,500 euros. If you have any doubts, it’s always okay to dispel them via chat. Consultants are there for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Security Seals

Security seals are provided free of charge. They are placed on each of your bags through the zippers. This way your baggage is fully secure. When you pick up your luggage the seal is proof that no one has opened and tampered with your luggage. If anyone has tried to open your luggage, the seal will be visibly broken. Then, the unique ID number will not match the picture you have taken. To me, this is extremely comfortable. This is how the seal works:

  1. You receive the seal in a certified shop / café / hotel when you arrive.
  2. You thread the seal through the two zipper pulls and tighten it.
  3. You take a picture of the seal. The ID has to be visible. This way your baggage can be identified as yours.
  4. If anything is unclear, you can ask the site employees for help or more detailed instructions.

Insurance

LuggageHero cooperates with one of the largest insurance companies in the world – First Marine Insurance Ltd. Each piece of baggage is insured every time you use the service. The amount of insurance is 2,500 euro. The only thing you need to remember is that payment must be processed directly via the LugaggeHero website. You don’t pay any extra fees for insurance. It’s included for free for each bag you store with LuggageHero.

I have checked the amount of insurance with other companies and it has turned out that no one offers higher insurance coverage. Terms and conditions are relatively clear so if I were to choose a luggage storage service while in Amsterdam, I would seriously consider LugaggageHero as my first option. If you want to learn more about the service and the company, visit their website to check all the details.

Where to Buy Luggage in Amsterdam

Okay, you have now a great option for luggage storage while in Amsterdam but what if you need a new bag asap? Things happen, you may lose your baggage or someone can steal it from you. Also, luggage is very often broken after a bumpy flight.

Trust me, there are many of them and each of them has stands with bags and suitcases. I believe I have seen at least two stands at the Albert Cuyp Market (one of them is called Luggage4all, it’s located at Albert Cuypstraat 134) which is one of the most popular street markets in Amsterdam. There, you can even buy a new piece of luggage at a very reasonable price. However, there is also a lot of crap sold there so make sure you thoroughly check the quality. Oh, and don’t forget to bargain, you can save some pocket money.

The market is located at Albert Cuypstraat, 1072 CN and it’s open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 to 5:00 pm. Other popular spots to visit while in need of a new bag or suitcase are Perry Sport (they have their own brand – Wildebeast which really cheap and the quality is okay) and some stands at Noordemarkt located at Noordernmarkt, 1015 MV, opened on Saturday between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm and Monday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Noordernmarkt is a great place for any kind of shopping. Even if you don’t need anything in particular, it’s always good there to soak up the atmosphere.

Where to Repair a Luggage in Amsterdam

And what if your luggage is broken but you not necessarily want to buy a new one? There is one more option for such situations – you can always repair it. But where to do it? Is it a popular service in Amsterdam? There are two recommended luggage services in Amsterdam:
