'We celebrated with the kid'

The Red Sox suffered their fourth straight loss Monday afternoon, but Boston still had something to celebrate on its off day Tuesday.
By that evening, those within the Red Sox organization knew Kristian Campbell was about to become a very rich man. The storied franchise made it official Wednesday afternoon when it announced an eight-year extension for the 22-year-old, who reportedly was guaranteed $60 million but can make up to $100 million on his new deal.
Alex Cora was asked about Boston’s long-term pact with Campbell a few hours after the press release went out, and the Red Sox manager revealed how the youngster immediately showcased his appreciation for the investment.
“Everybody’s excited,” Cora said on “WEEI Afternoons.” “Yesterday, we had a team dinner. We were planning on doing that on the off day regardless of if we were 0-5 or 5-0. We celebrated with the kid, you know? Actually, he picked up part of the tab.”
It’s fair to wonder — or perhaps assume — if another chunk of the bill was picked up by Garrett Crochet, who signed his own extension with Boston on Tuesday.

Campbell and Crochet will try to help the Red Sox get back in the win column Wednesday when they meet the Orioles for the middle contest of their three-game series in Baltimore. NESN’s full coverage begins at 5:30 p.m. ET.
